RESOLUTION USES HG THERAPY FOR TRAUMA First, you are taught a relaxation technique and helped into a highly relaxed state. Then the therapist will guide you through a visualisation technique which enables you to revisit the traumatic memories safely. At first this is done on an imaginary screen that you do not even look at, then you are progressively guided to view the memories more directly. The process is managed extremely carefully so that all the while you can remain calm. Eventually - and this may take a small number of sessions but often happens on day one - you reach a state where your brain can remain calm while viewing the memories. At this stage they are no longer a threat, and they no longer pop up in nightmares, waking thoughts or daydreams. This treatment originated in the fertile mind of Milton Erickson in the USA, who used to get his trauma patients to revisit their traumatic memories in a distant way through the mist inside a crystal ball. Richard Bandler adapted the idea, using a cinema screen instead of a crystal ball, and found it was also useful for phobias. In 1991 David Muss published the first UK paper on using the idea with trauma, calling it the rewind technique, and in the mid 1990's Joe Griffin added a number of vital steps and transferred the imaginary action to a TV, games console or laptop screen, to suit the changing times. It is probably the most direct exposure therapy that exists: all the imagery is produced by the patient's own imagination, and contains all the elements relevant to the individual, nothing more or less. Paradoxically, given this direct access to the patient's own traumatic memories, it is probably the most humane exposure therapy that exists, as the patient's levels of arousal and discomfort are controlled continuously by the therapist, and the process goes at the patient's own speed, reducing discomfort and preventing abreaction. It is very economical on resources, just needing a highly-trained therapist, a quiet room and a chair. No computer gadgetry, no simulators, no drugs.
