Treatment is designed to be brief: the goal is that symptoms are effectively relieved and there is no continuing need for or reliance upon therapy.
Progress is measured at the start and end of each session using the ‘Impact of Events Scale’, a one-page self-assessment checklist that is used often by trauma therapists in the NHS and private practice.
The programme is delivered through a network of therapists, trained in HGT (Human Givens Therapy http://www.hgi.org.uk/ ). This is a well-established therapy for the effective treatment of mental distress in the general population.
The goal of therapy is to break the link between the memory of the original event and the emotional response.
This is achieved by employing the patient’s own mental resources, with guidance by the therapist, who helps the patient to reduce anxiety levels within a calm and relaxed therapeutic setting.
